Description WOULD YOU LIKE TO PAINT LOOSER AND BRING A BOOST OF ENERGY TO YOUR PAINTING?  ARE YOU WILLING TO SET LIMITS TO YOUR ROUTINE TO GAIN FREEDOM IN YOUR PRACTICE?   Join Sarah Sedwick in OIL PAINTING BOOT CAMP!  This fun and focused class that hits the basics of value and composition design, and is all about rich color and lively brushwork.  Learn the alla prima technique, and pack your paintings with confident, harmonious color, while simplifying your palette!  Gain a new perspective on the still life, and great tips for bringing inspiration to your own studio practice! COURSE OBJECTIVES By the end of this course students will have an understanding of the following concepts and more: Develop an understanding of painting with oil paints Learn to use various tools to guide your painting practice Build a paint palette that can be used to paint any subject Understand how to prepare and arrange a still life Mix colors specifically for your still life Recognize the four elements that help us depict 3D form on a 2D surface Use the paintbrush in different ways Discover what is essential and what may be unnecessary in our paintings Create an underpainting or imprimatura Apply the 3-step all prima painting method COURSE IS OPEN! Lifetime Access - Download All Content Prerecorded - Work at Your Own Pace Cost - $149 REGISTER NOW! DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS LESSON 1 - MATERIALS We will begin by going over our materials. We will be working with a three-primary set of paint colors - three colors plus white, that’s it! Choose any colors you like - just make sure you have a red, a blue, and a yellow. I am using Titanium white, but any white you have is fine.  Throughout the course, you will see me use two different palettes.  You will be amazed to learn how many colors you can achieve with just three colors and white!   During this lesson, I will also share with you about the brushes I use, the mediums I prefer, which substrates I use and why, as well as, what you will need to set up your still life laboratory.   LESSON 2 - CREATE A PALETTE Next we will learn to build our palette.  You can choose any red, yellow, and blue.  It doesn't matter which ones you choose!  Any will work!  I suggest that you choose colors that you would like to learn more about.  Throughout the class you will see me demonstrate how to mix two different palettes.  You are welcome to choose the same red, yellow, and blue as me, or a completely different one.  This is the time for you to experiment!  So, have fun!  Whichever colors you work with, you will learn a lot about them - and a lot faster than you would if you were working with them in a sea of other pigments.  Remember, limitations will set you free! LESSON 3 - TWISTED 20'S One of my favorite workshop exercises, Twisted 20’s takes the pressure off of still life setup, and helps us loosen up and let go of preciousness by making the timer our friend. It’s a great way to warm up for a long day in the studio, get back in the groove when we’ve been away for a while - or just don’t know what to paint.   Watch as I demonstrate this process twice!  Learn how I set the stage for my still life, choose my paints, and mix my palette.  In between rounds, we will complete a "palette mix-down".  This is vital to refining and tweaking our mixtures to achieve better colors as we proceed from one painting to the next.  We will also twist our still life for a new view.   LESSON 4 - STROKE ECONOMY If “Twisted 20’s” didn’t loosen you up, Stroke Economy certainly will!  This exercise is designed to show you how much you can say with only a few brushstrokes - and how to get the most bang for each one of those brushstrokes.   I will share with you how to move your mixed up spectrum to a clean palette.  You have got to learn how to clean up for a new exercise, but keep the paint.  Stroke Economy is not timed, but we count our strokes - beginning with 25 and progressing through 20, 15, and finally doing a painting in only TEN brushstrokes!  Learn the rules for this exercise so that you can do it again and again in your studio. LESSON 5 - ALLA PRIMA PAINTING  “Alla Prima” is an Italian phrase meaning “All at once.” The French call it “Premier Coup,” and in English we call it “Wet-On-Wet,” or “Direct” painting. It generally means that a small painting is begun and finished in one sitting, and it’s a really fun and freeing way to paint. I’ve broken my own all prima process down into three steps (with a sneaky bonus step squeezed in), and I’ll walk you through it in our final lesson.  Choose objects for your still life based on pleasing color combinations, textures that attract you, or simply choose something that looks like fun to paint! The video includes some helpful tips on still life setup and lighting.  Learn to plan your composition, and examine value relationships before any color touches the canvas.  Preparation pays off,  and in this lesson, you will find out how!   COURSE IS OPEN! MEET SARAH SEDWICK - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR A prolific painter of still life and portraits, Sarah has been teaching workshops on alla prima painting around the country since 2013, and also offers an online art mentorship program.   Based in Eugene, Oregon since 2007, Sarah was born in Cleveland, Ohio.  In 2001, she earned a BFA from Maryland Institute, College of Art. Her oil paintings explore the simple beauty of everyday objects, and are most often inspired by color combinations and perceptual effects. All are painted from life.   Her teaching philosophy is simple: the more you paint, the more yoU improve - so find ways to make painting as enjoyable as possible! Let go of perfectionism, and watch the results unfold. PRIVATE GROUP JUST FOR YOU!   This course will have a private Facebook group just for you!  Sarah is no longer offering feedback for this course, but students are consistently posting work! COURSE SUPPLIES Below is a list of the supplies that I will be using for the projects in this course.  However, you are always encouraged to use what you have on hand.  Canvases or other painting surfaces: One 12x16” canvas board, a pad of canvas paper, or Arches oil paper, a couple of small canvases, minimum size 8x8” - or any size you’d like to work on for about 3 hours. Paint -  I use M. Graham brand. You’ll need one red, one blue, one yellow, plus white.  I use the following in two separate lessons: Titanium white Alizarin Crimson Cadmium red Ultramarine Blue Pthalo blue Cadmium yellow Hansa yellow Some other options are Pyrrol Red, Azo Yellow, and Cobalt Blue Note: water-soluble oils are not recommended. Palette - a 12x16 (or larger) disposable paper palette pad. Get white, not gray. Palette knife – not a teeny one. You want to be able to scoop up a pile of paint with it.  At least two inches long, and flexible.  I like the RGM softgrip no. 45 (blue handle) Rags or paper towels (I like disposable blue shop towels, available at hardware stores) Gamsol Gamblin solvent free gel 2 glass jars with tight-fitting lids, for Gamsol Viewfinder. I like the ViewCatcher by The Color Wheel PRINT SUPPLY LIST! Along with all of these supplies, I also have my favorite easel that I wanted to share about! What I love about the LederEasel is that I can travel with it, and it is so compact! I have created a short video to share more about this easel with you, and a link to purchase if you are interested! PURCHASE EASEL!
